Ivan Sen and the art of the road
| Abstract |
|---|
This paper considers the work of critically acclaimed Australian director Ivan Sen. It does this primarily through a consideration of the role of the road-space within three of Sen's short films Vanish (1998), Tears (1998) and Dust (2000) and his feature-film, Beneath Clouds (2001). In the first section, a close reading of the short films is undertaken focusing on the compositional importance of the road, and introducing and examining key thematic elements in those films and tensions that emerge in viewing them. In the second section, the road film as a genre is analyzed, as well as its relationship to the road-space. The final section involves a close reading of Beneath Clouds including a detailed analysis of its relationship to the road film genre and to the road space that it depicts.
